Here’s a fun fact: In 1967 the United Nations actually ratified a treaty declaring outer space free for exploration and use by all countries and that no one, not any country or entity, can lay claim to territories on any celestial body—such as on the moon for instance.
But that may soon change this 2022 with the announcement of MoonStrike, a blockchain game wherein players battle it out for survival in a uniquely challenging lunar environment, and where the only rules that apply are the ones that ensure dominance over territory and resources.
Combining base-building, crafting, and first person shooter (FPS) mode, MoonStrike puts together various influences from other wildly popular games such as Fortnite, Clash of Clans, Call of Duty, and even the adventure and role-playing (RPG) aspects of Sea of Thieves and Horizon: Zero Down to conceptualize what may well be a contender for the first big AAA blockchain game.
And by “blockchain game”, we of course mean integrating a decentralized player-driven economy wherein it's the players themselves who get rewarded for investing their time, developing their skills and supporting the game—completely different from how it used to be before when it was only the gaming companies who pocketed all the profits.
Using non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for characters, structures, vehicles and weapons, the moon presents itself for the taking for any player looking for the next frontier in gaming.
MoonStrike takes players to battle head on with others in a unique and challenging lunar landscape.
Storyline and Gameplay Modes
MoonStrike is set in a futuristic age of space colonization wherein humanity seeks to establish its presence on the moon and using whatever resources there are available, to set up bases to farm, craft and manufacture tools and weapons to further the exploration and conquest of the terrain. However, rivalries between clans and the lunar world’s inherent hostile environment make life difficult for players.
MoonStrike is actually a concept expansion for a previous game, Moon Farming. But while making the game, developers saw the potential for a much richer and massive gaming experience than just farming and decided to aim for something more ambitious. Currently, demo versions of both games are available for review on Steam.
The open world setting itself is rendered in high definition graphics using the Unreal engine, where the physics also brings into play meteors, lunar storms, and of course, the moon’s unique gravity.
First Person Shooter PvP — MoonStrike’s 5v5 mode is unique from the usual FPS game wherein players can just mindlessly shoot at opponents and respawn as many times as they like. On the lunar surface, the scarcity of oxygen as well as limited airdrops make for complex situations that require strategizing and resource management to take control of the map.
Each map is procedurally generated each time, making every battle an entirely new experience. Players choose their NFT weapons and special items which they think will give them the advantage, as well as consumables for use in various combat situations. Vehicles such as rovers and jetpacks are also options that would make for more exciting engagements.Base Building — Aside from gritty combat, players can also choose to focus on developing the territory they own on the moon. This involves building structures for resource gathering, mining, crafting, defense and upgrades in order to build one’s forces and wealth, and expand one’s territory. Players can organize clans and build cooperatively and interact with neighbors to trade for profit and build alliances.
Managing and expanding a lunar colony will require careful planning and allocation of in-game resources.
Crafting — Different areas on the moon will yield different resources that are required for crafting items at different tier levels, some of which will be essential to accomplish some of the game’s more difficult quests, creating a demand for these special items. As crafted items are also NFTs, minting them will require the use of the game’s utility token, MOST.
Voice chat
Aiming to be at par with current online games, MoonStrike plans to include a voice chat feature to smoothen team coordination in gameplay—a necessity when it comes to implementing tactics that could mean the difference between protecting one’s resources or losing potential team revenue. If carried out, MoonStrike will be the first blockchain game ever with voice chat capability.
How to earn in MoonStrike
As with most other NFT games, profit can be made in the marketplace where players can trade or sell their NFTs which they have won, crafted or upgraded. Items that can be sold include land (after reaching a specific base level), unique resources, crafting components, consumables, weapons, gadgets, and vehicles.
Holders of MOST can also choose to stake their tokens to support the network and generate rewards.
MoonStrike will also feature a Battle Pass option, similar to the monetization scheme in Fortnite, where players can directly invest in the game from time to time and be assured of returns in the form of in-game rewards along the game’s development, though more details about this have yet to be released.
MoonStrike’s economy loop.
Tokenomics
The MoonStrike economy is powered by the MOST token running on the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) whose maximum supply is pegged at 10 billion tokens (10,000,000,000). Aside from use in purchasing and staking, MOST will also be used as a governance token for community decisions.
Its supply will be allocated as follows:
Seed (7%) — 700,000,000
Private Sale 1 (8%) — 800,000,000
Private Sale 2 (10%) — 1,000,000,000
Public Sale (1%) — 100,000,000
Liquidity/Market makers (13%) — 1,300,000,000
Treasury/Marketing (20%) — 2,000,000,000
Team(10%) — 1,000,000,000
Advisors (6%) — 600,000,000
Staking/Play-to-Earn (25%) — 2,500,000,000
Roadmap
MoonStrike has just recently released official game footage, showing off richly textured characters, weapons and landscapes. Though the full version is not yet scheduled for release within 2022, the initial NFT character collection however will go on presale starting in June, with token staking slated in the last quarter.
A total of 5,555 NFT characters are included in the presale at 0.15 ETH starting price. Each NFT is of AAA design quality and uniquely hand-drawn. This however does not mean to imply that MoonStrike follows a pay-to-earn model as the game will still be largely free-to-play, though certain rare items will provide certain advantages in the gameplay.
Team and Partnerships
MoonStrike is led by Maksym Vysochanskiy, who is also the founder of game studio SimulaMaker as well as other names in the game design field such as Artiom Efimchik and Pascal Luban among many others. Recently, MoonStrike has also partnered with Onchain Group and Blockchain Game Alliance.
Conclusion
With the NFT game boom still in its infancy, the field still remains wide open for an AAA quality game that could attain the same popularity and massive revenue as blockchain gaming trailblazer—Axie Infinity, and there are quite more than a few games currently being developed vying for that title. For MoonStrike, community following is steadily gaining ground even at this early stage with over 40 thousand followers already on Twitter and Telegram combined.
Judging from the game footage alone however, MoonStrike could be a worthy candidate, and if things work out, MoonStrike might find itself already on the moon, in quite a different sense from the game.
